Eighth grade Social Studies covers many topics. Mainly, we cover U.S. history from the French and Indian War to World War I. Primarily we divide the year into four main topics within this time frame.
The first quarter focuses on the birth of our new nation with a review of the colonies, the American Revolution, forming a government, and the Constitution. Students will take the Constitution test and complete our first DBQ which is about Valley Forge.
The second quarter deals with the expansion of our country throughout the 1800s. Specific topics deal with the Jefferson Era, our new national identity, Jacksonian Democracy, America moving and expanding west. Our second DBQ will deal with the Constitution and the safeguards it provides.
Our divided nation provides the focus for the third quarter. Within this we look at how the North and South each developed, the issue of slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. The third quarter DBQ will be about the Battle of Gettysburg as a turning point to the war and our nation.
Our last quarter focuses on the U.S.'s continued growth, industrialization, immigration, growing pains, and progressive spirit as we become a world power by the early 1900s. Our final DBQ deals with Progressivism and how the U.S. dealt with some of its growing problems.
Scattered throughout the year we will look at other topics including geography, current events, and the impact that certain groups - African Americans, women, immigrants, etc. - had on our history and how they helped form the nation we are today.
